High spatial resolution strain measurements at the surface of duplex stainless steels

International audience; The determination of local strain fields at the surface of materials is of major importance for understanding their reactivity. In the present paper, lithography is used to fabricate grid points at the microscale and to map strain gradients within grains and between grains. This method was applied to duplex stainless steels which exhibit heterogeneous strain distributions under straining conditions. The influence of various parameters (the specimen microstructure, the density of slip bands, the number of systems activated and the grid geometry) on the strain value was discussed.

The ‘grave of the Court Pit’, A rediscovered Bronze Age tomb from Carchemish

This paper examines the British Museum unpublished records related to an Early Bronze (EB) Age pithos burial uncovered a century ago in the Inner Town at Carchemish. The grave, cursorily cited and variously dated (Chalcolithic, EB or even LBA) in the final reports, was described in some detail by Hogarth and Thompson; a precise dating is, however, possible today thanks to the information of paramount importance given by T. E. Lawrence who identified and took a picture of the associated finds, which was recently rediscovered in the Carchemish Archives. ZnSe single crystals, obtained by the Solid Phase Recrystallization (SPR) method under three different pressure conditions, 10 and 5 atm of Se, and 2 atm of argon, have been investigated by means of photoluminescence (PL) and optical microscopy. Special attention has been paid to the surface state of the samples. Samples recrystallized under 10 atm of Se present the best rate between the PL response for the excitonic zone and the deep level one that shows a clean PL emission without significant peaks and/or bands. Polarization calibration techniques for the new-generation VLBI

The calibration and analysis of polarization observations in Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) requires the use of specific algorithms that suffer from several limitations, closely related to assumptions in the data properties that may not hold in observations taken with new-generation VLBI equipment. Nowadays, the instantaneous bandwidth achievable with VLBI backends can be as high as several GHz, covering several radio bands simultaneously. In addition, the sensitivity of VLBI observations with state-of-the-art equipment may reach dynamic ranges of tens of thousands, both in total intensity and in polarization. Scanning electron microscopy characterization of ZnSe single crystals grown by solid-phase recrystallization

ZnSe single crystals were grown from n-type microcrystalline boules by a Solid Phase Recrystallization (SPR) method. The recrystallizations were performed under different atmospheres, Ar or Se, and pressures to investigate the influence of growth conditions on the structural features of the resulting crystals. The samples were mechanically and mechano-chemically polished in a bromine methanol solution and, then, etched in HCl for a short time, before characterization. The homogeneity and the nature of defects in the crystals were studied by Cathodoluminescence (CL) in the scanning electron microscope (SEM). Numerical simulation of micro-crack initiation that is based on Tanaka-Mura micro-crack nucleation model is presented. Three improvements were added to this model. Firstly, multiple slip bands where micro-cracks may occur are used in each grain. Second improvement deals with micro-crack coalescence by extending existing micro-cracks along grain boundaries and connecting them into a macro-crack. Construction and commissioning of the S-Band high gradient RF laboratory at IFIC

An S-band High-Gradient (HG) Radio Frequency (RF) laboratory is under construction and commissioning at IFIC. The purpose of the laboratory is to perform investigations of high-gradient phenomena and to develop normal-conducting RF technology, with special focus on RF systems for hadron-therapy. The layout of the facility is derived from the scheme of the Xbox-3 test facility at CERN [1] and uses medium peak-power (7.5 MW) and high repetition rate (400 Hz) klystrons, whose RF output is combined to drive two testing slots to the required power. High-pressure study of the aurophilic topological Dirac material AuI

We endeavour to explore the high-pressure study in the aurophilic AuI within the state-of-the-art of first principles. The impediment of expressing precise ground-state features of aurophilic compounds that had afflicted prior theoretical research has been resolved by incorporating van der Waals corrections (vdw). Mechanical and dynamical stability are ensured at ambient using the computed elastic constants and phonon dispersion curves. The dynamical instability is triggered by the application of pressure in AuI, as evidenced by the softening of an acoustic mode (Eu) at ∼7 GPa. Influence of applied strain on the microstructural corrosion of AlMg2 as-cast aluminium alloy in sodium chloride solution

International audience; The corrosion behavior of ISO AlMg2 (AA5052) was studied at the microscale using the Electrochemical Microcell Technique. The influence of plastic deformation on the corrosion resistance of this alloy was also examined. After polishing, pitting at small copper-enriched precipitates and structural etching were observed. After deformation, numerous slip bands were found in grains. After 5.5% plastic strain, the global electrochemical behavior of samples was significantly affected. Pitting potential was decreased in sites containing slip bands or in sites with large strain gradients (measured using microgauges deposited by lithography).
